The Story Behind Saskia Snyder Designs

Saskia Snyder Designs began as a reflection of my independence, creativity, and love for beauty. I’ve always been a lone wolf, carving my own path, and naming my business after myself felt like the simplest and most authentic choice. Over time, I’ve realized that at the heart of it all, I started this business because I love beautiful things—not just the things themselves, but the stories behind them. I love the process of shopping for, curating, and assembling pieces into something that feels meaningful. Design, for me, is about creating homes filled with memories, not sterile showrooms. My own home is a testament to that philosophy—a collection of art, furnishings, and treasures gathered over time from travels and life experiences.

The journey toward interior design wasn’t always a straight line. Growing up, I always felt drawn to design but lacked the confidence to ask people to trust me with their spaces. It wasn’t until I took my first architecture class that I was hooked. I loved the creative process, though I quickly discovered that interior design—not architecture—was where my skills could truly shine. A turning point came when my husband, who runs a large property management company, began asking for my input on his properties. Then, one of his colleagues asked me to help with his spaces, and the rest is history.

Today, my style is rooted in timeless elegance. I call myself a modern traditionalist at heart, drawn to classic elements like natural wood, stone, carved details, and age-old craftsmanship. I love creating spaces that are welcoming and livable, and I always design as though I were going to live in the space myself. I ask questions like: How would I use this space? What do I want to see when I walk in? How do I want this space to make me feel? Our homes are our havens from the chaos of the outside world—places for solace and celebration.

The clients I love working with most are friendly, open-minded, and honest. They’re people who have tried to create their spaces on their own but have realized they need help—and value the time they’ll save by partnering with a designer. I want my clients to trust me with their vision and to feel comfortable navigating the inevitable "ugly" stage before the beauty of the final result emerges. My favorite part of the process is seeing the plan come together: the hours spent curating just the right pieces, the excitement of presenting the vision to the client, and, ultimately, the joy of creating a space that feels uniquely theirs.

As a California Real Estate Broker, I bring a practical perspective to design. I understand the economics of where to invest in a home—whether it’s a space that reflects your personal taste for long-term living or a feature that enhances resale value. Homes are meant to be lived in, loved, and eventually passed on, and I firmly believe in designing for the present while respecting the bones of the home for the future.

A Love of Travel

Travel is my second love, and it has shaped every aspect of my creative process. Growing up in a small town, I would pore over National Geographic, Life, and home magazines, dreaming of the places I saw in those pages. When I finally began traveling, I realized that no picture could ever do justice to experiencing a place in person. Walking through a thousand-year-old cathedral, wandering the ancient streets of Greece and Rome, stumbling across a forgotten colosseum in the Turkish mountains, or marveling at the intricate carvings of Alhambra—all of these moments have left an indelible mark on my soul.

Two destinations stand out to me as particularly transformative. The Alhambra in Granada, Spain, was like nothing I’d ever seen—its stone carvings so delicate they felt like lace, weightless and impossibly intricate. I could spend hours there, completely immersed in its beauty. Similarly, Vézelay Cathedral in France took my breath away, with its Romanesque heaviness giving way to Gothic lightness and soaring stained-glass windows. It’s a holy, sacred place where time feels suspended.

When I travel, I collect memories in the form of tangible pieces: lace from Belgium, pottery from Greece and Spain, rugs from Turkey, antiques from European street markets, and even wool from Ireland. I follow a “shoebox rule” for luggage—if it fits, it comes home; if it doesn’t, I ask myself if I love it enough to ship it. Each piece in my home tells a story of where I’ve been, and they continue to inspire my work.

As for my travel bucket list, I dream of visiting all 50 states and exploring places steeped in American history and natural wonders. Internationally, Chile holds a special place in my heart—it’s breathtakingly beautiful, though admittedly at the bottom of the world. Iceland, Greenland, and the Nordic countries are also on my list, though I’d need summer months to escape the cold. While I’ve lost interest in some destinations like Asia and Africa for now, I’m always open to rediscovering the curiosity that drives me to explore new corners of the world.

Life and Design

At the core of everything I do is a passion for justice—not in the trendy, politicized sense, but in the truest sense of the word: fairness, honesty, and respect. I value integrity and authenticity in a world that often feels contrived, and I channel that into my designs. When I create a home for someone, my goal is to craft a space where they feel safe, welcomed, and entirely themselves. I want their home to be a refuge, a place that reflects their unique story and allows them to leave the chaos of the world at the door.

In my daily life, I find grounding in simple routines. Every morning, I make my bed and get dressed, even if I don’t plan to leave the house. It’s a small act of readiness that sets the tone for my day. Recharging for me means taking a long, luxurious bath or listening to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, letting the music and stillness bring me peace.

My home is a reflection of who I am—beautifully arranged yet filled with memories that remind me of the blessings in my life. I hope that when people walk into my home, they feel comfortable and free to be themselves. That’s the same feeling I want to create for every client—a space that quietly, yet boldly, reflects who they are.

Wisdom for Creatives

If I could offer one piece of advice to someone starting a creative career, it would be this: There will always be someone better or worse than you. Learn from both. Be open to criticism—it’s not personal; it’s an opportunity to grow, adjust, and redirect. And most importantly, don’t be afraid to fail. Every failure is a step closer to success, and every idea you write down and act on brings you closer to discovering what you’re truly capable of.

Preserving the history of our 1935 Federalist-style home in San Diego was a delicate balancing act. Its historic designation meant the exterior had to remain largely unchanged, a challenge when the interior was begging for a modern update. My husband and I purchased the house in 2011, drawn to its old-world charm – and the basement "man cave" that captivated our two young boys. We lived in the house for four years before embarking on a major renovation, balancing our needs with the home's historical significance. The project was extensive, requiring us to move out for a year while we replaced major components. We rebuilt the fireplace, rewired the entire house, and replaced all the cast iron plumbing. Modernizing while preserving the home's character was a constant challenge. We learned to navigate the restrictions that came with owning a historic property, thanks in part to the guidance of a skilled architect. Inside, we were able to preserve the original wood floors, with our flooring company meticulously matching the width and length of the planks and even replicating the walnut peg inlays. The small, outdated kitchen, butler's pantry, and maid's quarters were transformed into a spacious, open-concept chef's kitchen, complete with dual sinks and a beautiful bar to showcase our wine and scotch collection. The old sunroom was redesigned to accommodate a new fireplace and French doors leading to the yard. Upstairs, we created a serene master suite above the sunroom, complete with an ensuite bathroom. This renovation journey was a labor of love and a steep learning curve. It sparked my passion for interior design, ultimately leading to a career change. Despite the challenges, I wouldn't change a thing. Our home is a testament to the beauty of blending history with modern living.
